Deals on films by Antonio Hens and Marco Berger

BUENOS AIRES – Adding to the lengthening list of deals going down at Buenos Aires’ Ventana Sur Latin American film market, TLA Releasing has swooped on recent films by two rising name-directors of gay Latino films, acquiring U.K., Polish and French-speaking European rights to “The Last Match,” from Andalusian Antonio Hens (“Clandestinos”), and “Hawaii,” from Argentina’s Marco Berger (pictured, “Sexual Tension: Volatile,” “Plan B,” “Absent”).
“Match” and “Hawaii,” which both screened Thursday at Ventana Sur, will be released in theaters, and on DVD and VOD in 2014, TLA announced Saturday.
Derek Curl, prexy of TLA Releasing worldwide and Ida Martins of Media Luna New Films, the two movies’ sales agent, finalized the distribution pact at Ventana Sur.
“’Last Match’ and ‘Hawaii’ are strong additions to the TLA Releasing library as we continue to support Latin American productions’ efforts to tell engaging stories and dedicate ourselves to exposing international audiences to them,” Curl said.

Hens returns to the world of marginalized characters in the lighter-toned Cuba-set “Match,” a Spain-Cuba co-production about two young lovers who get by, one by selling his body to tourists, the other through living with a richer woman. They dream of escape, a better life and freedom through their love of soccer.
After two contrasting takes on homo-eroticism, played for comedy in his feature debut “Plan B,” and for suspense in “Ausente,” in “Hawaii,” an Argentine production, Berger reflects on how power-play taints the relationship between two former childhood friends. They are now converted into an employer and hired hand, both restoring a house in the Argentine countryside.
Berger also co-wrote and co-helmed with Marcelo Monaco the multi-part “Sexual Tension: Volatile,” which Curl co-produced with Didier Costet.
